BreakAway Federal Systems was founded expressly to develop sophisticated, analytical training applications, advanced management models, and leading edge data visualization tools.
The Company has strategic relationships with AAI, Boeing, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, GMA Industries, and General Dynamics among others. Our ability to form such relationships is a direct result of years of experience developing military models and operational PC-based warfare simulations for use by the Military. The US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, The Office of the Secretary of Defense Net Assessment (OSD), the Army War College, the Navy War College, the National Defense University, the NATO War College, the Joint Forces Command Joint Experimentation Directorate and many other governmental and military organizations have also used BreakAway developed software.

Douglas Whatley – Founder and CEO
As Founder and CEO of BreakAway, Mr. Whatley has over 20 years of successful game development and management experience in the interactive entertainment industry. He began his career at America Online where he was instrumental in helping to create the AOL client/server infrastructure. After that, he held senior-level management positions at MicroProse, ABC Sports, and Disney where he worked on critically acclaimed software titles such as Darklands, Gunship 2000, Sid Meier’s Civilization, and ABC’s Monday Night Football.
In the eight years since he founded BreakAway, Mr. Whatley has positioned the company as a leader in game development, serious simulation, modeling, and 3-D visualization technology. By doing so, he has attracted high-profile customers in the entertainment industry as well as the federal government and the general marketplace.
Mr. Whatley was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for 2004. In recognition for their sustained growth, BreakAway was recently named to Deloitte’s prestigious Technology Fast 50 Program for the second consecutive year. The company counts Microsoft, Sierra, Vivendi Universal, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, National Institute of Justice, and The US Army among its prestigious clients.
Paul H. Mauritz – Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy
Mr. Mauritz leads the Corporate Strategy organization at BreakAway, which is responsible for Marketing, Business Development, Sales, Product Management and Marketing and Corporate Development, Mr. Mauritz continues to lead BreakAway’s entry into the government and corporate modeling and simulation markets, while helping maintain the focus on entertainment game development.
With more than 25 years of experience in business development and operations in the technology industry, Mr. Mauritz brings a proven track record of success in positioning emerging technology companies. Prior to joining BreakAway, Mr. Mauritz was the Assistant Secretary for Technology Strategy and Business Development for the Department of Business and Economic Development in the State of Maryland, where he was responsible for driving the effort to position Maryland as a leader in technology and for business growth across the State.
Prior to his public service position, he served as President of Netcordia, Inc., a leading provider of Network Management focused Appliances. Prior to Netcordia, he was the Managing Partner of Four-M Associates, a business accelerator, and held contract positions as the Chief Operating Officer of Xcellacom, a Virtual ISP enabler, and Managing Partner of AppSolve, a Product Marketing consulting firm.
Prior to Four-M Associates, he was a co-founder, Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy, and a member of the Board of Directors for TidePoint Corporation, a Managed Services Provider simplifying inter-company e-business. Mr. Mauritz was responsible for leading development and growth of the company including raising venture capital, positioning the company and marketing the service.
Prior to TidePoint, he served as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for RPM Consulting, where he was instrumental in the positioning and growth of the company from a $12 million organization to one of more than $33 million. In this role, he was responsible for developing and implementing corporate vision and company positioning, and also played a key role in the company’s acquisition by Computer Horizons Corporation in August 1998.
Mr. Mauritz has also held key executive positions at SSDS, Inc. a federally focused, systems-integration business which, under his leadership, grew to be a $43-million, commercially centered business with national focus in just three years, and at Digital Equipment Corporation. With Digital, Mr. Mauritz was responsible for Sales, Marketing and Technology in a global business unit.
Deborah Tillett – Executive Vice President, Development
Ms. Tillett is responsible for leading all of the development efforts across the entertainment game, serious game and product segments of the Company.
She is a technology industry veteran with strategic marketing, branding, and product positioning expertise. Under her guidance, BreakAway has grown from a handful of game developers in Hunt Valley five years ago to a present-day staff of 88 with studios in Austin and Corpus Christi Texas. Over the past two years, her efforts have resulted in company revenue growth of over 250 percent.
Ms. Tillett also works with the Baltimore County Economic Development Office and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) to promote the Hunt Valley gaming community on a national level. She is a member of the external board for University of Maryland Baltimore County’s Center for Women in Information Technology; she serves on the advisory board for the College of Business and Economics at Towson University and is a board member of The Julie Center, a community center run by Sister Barbara English, of Notre Dame de Namours. Ms. Tillett was named one of the Daily Record’s Innovator’s of the Year for 2004, received a Bravo Award from Smart Woman magazine in the summer of 2005 and has been named a 2006 Distinguished Alumni & Dean’s Recognition Award recipient of Towson University.
Before joining BreakAway, Ms. Tillett was a Partner at the Consulting firm Eager Street Group and held the position of Chief Marketing Officer of Firewater.com. She has also held senior management positions at other technology companies, including MicroProse Software where she was VP of Marketing. She was founder and President of OT Sports, LLC, an ABC/Walt Disney Company joint venture, and co-launched three successful Internet startups.
She holds a BA degree from Towson University and an MBA from Loyola College’s Sellinger School of Business.
